Federal Reporting & Assistance
These federal agencies are your primary resources for reporting fraud and getting official guidance.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
The primary federal agency for consumer fraud. Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or call 1-877-382-4357. The FTC also publishes free consumer alerts and guides.
FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)
Report internet-based fraud, phishing, and cybercrime at ic3.gov. The IC3 collects data that helps law enforcement investigate large-scale fraud operations.
Medicare Fraud & Abuse
Report Medicare fraud to the Office of Inspector General at oig.hhs.gov or call 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477).
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
For financial product fraud, identity theft, or financial abuse, submit a complaint at consumerfinance.gov/complaint or call 1-855-411-2372.
U.S. Postal Inspection Service
For mail fraud, lottery scams, or packages related to fraud, report to the USPIS at postalinspectors.uspis.gov or call 1-877-876-2455.
Social Security Administration (SSA) OIG
Report Social Security impersonation scams to the SSA Office of Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov or call 1-800-269-0271.
State-Level Resources
Your state's Attorney General office is also a key resource for local consumer fraud.
State Attorney General
Every state has a consumer protection division. Visit naag.org/find-my-ag to find your state's office and file a local complaint, especially for in-person or contractor fraud.
State Adult Protective Services (APS)
If an older adult is being financially exploited by a caregiver, family member, or someone they know, contact your local APS. Find your state's contact at eldercare.acl.gov or call the Eldercare Locator: 1-800-677-1116.
